Samurai I - Musashi Miyamoto (1954) follows the journey of Takezo, a wild and untamed orphan, who, along with his best friend Matahachi, departs their village to join a military force heading into combat. After their side suffers defeat, the duo finds refuge in the secluded residence of a widow, Oko, and her daughter, Akemi. Oko's seduction of Matahachi leads him to abandon his promise to the virtuous Otsu. Oko, Matahachi, and Akemi then travel to Kyoto, while Takezo returns to their village. Matahachi's family disbelieves Takezo's account and has him imprisoned for treason. A monk saves him from execution and imposes a rigorous study of the samurai code. Otsu and Takezo develop deep feelings for each other, and she vows to wait for him as he embarks on his path as a wandering samurai.
