Baskavígin. The Slaying of Basque Whalers (2016) chronicles the harrowing journey of three whaling ships from San Sebastian that venture into the treacherous North Atlantic in June 1615. Their destination: the icy shores of northern Iceland, where the learned Jón Guðmundsson, known as Jón the Wise, eagerly awaits their arrival. The expedition, led by captains Martín de Villafranca, Pedro de Aguirre, and Esteban de Tellería, consists of 83 seasoned sailors. As autumn sets in, the harsh Nordic cold brings famine and desperation, prompting a young Icelandic man to steal a substantial piece of whale blubber from the whaling base. This theft escalates into a violent clash. Just as the Basque crew prepares to depart for San Sebastian, a colossal storm devastates their fleet, stranding the 83 men on the island. With winter's relentless grip and inadequate resources, and local laws forbidding their stay, the whalers desperately search for a way to endure the unforgiving conditions.
