The Chess Players (1977) unfolds in the backdrop of colonial India during 1856, where the British Resident of the East India Company, portrayed by Richard Attenborough, notices the monarch of Lucknow's disinterest in governance. Seeking to exploit this, he plots to annex the province. Meanwhile, two local noblemen, played by Sanjeev Kumar and Saeed Jaffrey, are deeply engrossed in a prolonged chess rivalry, neglecting the political turmoil around them. As a result, the kingdom's situation deteriorates rapidly.
