Payback (1999) follows Porter (Mel Gibson), who is lured into a high-stakes robbery by his former associate, Val (Gregg Henry). The target is $130,000 in illicit funds from Chinese Triads, a job that promises no police involvement. The operation seems flawless until Porter's wife, Lynn (Deborah Kara Unger), betrays him by shooting him in the back. This treachery is orchestrated by Val, who had manipulated Lynn by showing her a photo of Porter with another woman (Maria Bello). Their plan was to use the stolen money to settle Val's debts and return to "The Syndicate." However, their scheme backfires when Porter returns five months later, transformed into a ruthless sociopath seeking his share of the $70,000. Brian Helgeland, known for his work on L.A. Confidential and Conspiracy Theory, directs this adaptation of Donald E. Westlake's novel The Hunter, originally penned under the pseudonym Richard Stark. The story also inspired John Boorman's Point Blank, starring Lee Marvin.
