The Human Condition III: A Soldier's Prayer (1961) follows the journey of Kaji, a man with a deep-seated aversion to violence, who is coerced into serving in the Japanese military during World War II. Despite his pacifistic nature, Kaji is forced to adapt to the brutal realities of war and learn to take lives on the battlefield. As the war concludes with Japan's surrender, Kaji and a group of fellow soldiers undertake a perilous trek on foot towards the south, where Kaji hopes to reunite with his beloved Michiko. Their journey is fraught with numerous dangers, and eventually, Kaji is captured by the Red Army, where he endures harsh treatment reminiscent of what was inflicted on the Chinese.
