Tale of Tales (1979)

Tale of Tales (1979) presents a cinematic experience that mirrors the fragmented nature of human memory, much like Tarkovsky's "Mirror." Instead of following a linear narrative, the film weaves together a series of interconnected sequences, each evoking associations that trigger recollections. This non-traditional structure allows the movie to delve into the profound impact of war, particularly the immense casualties endured by the Soviet Union on the Eastern Front during World War II. The film features a cast of recurring characters whose interactions form the backbone of the story. Notable figures include a poet, a young girl and her bull, a young boy and his crows, dancers, and soldiers, with a special focus on the enigmatic little grey wolf (Russian: syeryenkiy volchok). A recurring motif that ties these diverse themes together is the image of green apples, which may represent life, hope, or untapped potential.
