The Edge of the World (1937) begins with three individuals exploring the rugged cliffs of a Shetland island, where they discover a grave marker at the brink of a steep drop, inscribed with "Peter Manson ... gone over." One of the trio shares the tale behind the grave marker, transporting the story back a decade. The island's traditional way of life is under threat from mainland steam trawlers, endangering its existence as a fishing hub. Peter Manson, a prominent community figure, opposes relocating to the mainland, despite his son Robbie's impending departure. Meanwhile, Robbie's twin sister, Ruth, is set to marry Robbie's close friend, Andrew Gray. Tensions rise between Robbie and Andrew over the evacuation, culminating in a fateful cliff race that results in a devastating tragedy, deeply affecting both the Manson and Gray families. Years later, Ruth discloses her pregnancy with an illegitimate child, offering a glimmer of hope for reconciliation between the feuding families. However, the islanders face imminent evacuation and a final, heart-wrenching calamity.
