The Midnight Man (1974) follows the story of Jim Slade, a former police detective who is released from prison after serving time for a crime of passion. With the help of his parole officer, Linda, Slade secures a job as a night watchman on a college campus and finds lodging with his friends, Quartz and Judy. One evening, while patrolling the campus, Slade stumbles upon the lifeless body of Natalie Clayborne, a charming student. The police swiftly focus their investigation on Ewing, a zealous custodian with an unsettling religious zeal. However, Slade's keen instincts as a former detective lead him to believe that Ewing is not the culprit. Driven by his curiosity, Slade begins his own investigation, uncovering a shocking secret: a tape recording of Natalie's therapy session reveals that her father, State Senator Clayborne, has been involved in an incestuous relationship with her. As Slade delves deeper, he realizes that uncovering Clayborne's secrets places him in grave danger, given the senator's significant political influence.
