The She-Wolves (1957) follows the tale of Gervais and Bernard, two prisoners of war who successfully escape from their captivity. Bernard is driven by the desire to seek refuge with Hélène, a woman he has been romantically corresponding with, whom he refers to as his "war grandmother." Gervais agrees to accompany Bernard on his journey. Tragically, Bernard meets his end when he is struck by a train before they reach their destination. Gervais, left alone, decides to introduce himself to Hélène, who, having never seen Bernard, mistakes Gervais for her war godson. Too frail to reveal the truth, Gervais assumes Bernard's identity and settles in with Hélène. The plot thickens as two more women enter Gervais' life, entangling him in their intricate web: Agnès, Hélène's envious sister, and Julia, Bernard's sister, who feigns recognition of him.
