The Vesuvians (1997) presents a collection of five distinct narratives, each offering a unique fairytale perspective on the city of Naples, crafted by some of its most esteemed filmmakers. The first segment, "La Stirpe di Iana/Iana's Descendants," revolves around a kidnapping plot and a group of contemporary warrior women on motorcycles, each named after popular Italian laundry detergent brands. "Maruzella" tells the story of a melancholic, aging transvestite residing above a porn theater, who offers mysterious services to patrons until a chance encounter with a disillusioned woman alters her life. "Sofialoren" is a surreal narrative about a destitute fisherman and his cherished squid, which transforms into a beautiful woman at night. "Il Diavolo nella Bottiglia/The Devil in the Bottle" serves as a moral tale about greed and retribution. Lastly, "La Salita/The Climb" follows the mayor of Naples as he ascends Mount Vesuvius, encountering symbolic figures and reflecting on the ambiguous mission of 'the left' in the present political landscape.
