Captains Courageous (1937) follows the journey of Harvey Cheyne (Freddie Bartholomew), a privileged and indulged 12-year-old who finds himself in a life-altering situation after tumbling overboard during a transatlantic voyage. When he awakens on a Gloucester fishing vessel, the captain (Lionel Barrymore) assigns him to work alongside his own son (Mickey Rooney). Initially resentful, Harvey gradually forms a bond with Manuel (Spencer Tracy), a humble Portuguese fisherman. Manuel and the crew educate Harvey about the rigors and rewards of life on the sea, transforming him into a respected member of the crew. However, Harvey must confront one final challenge before being reunited with his father (Melvyn Douglas).
