Juvenile Court (1938)

Juvenile Court (1938) follows Public Defender Gary Franklin, who is disheartened by his inability to spare criminal Dutch Adams from a death sentence, attributing Dutch's actions to the harsh environment of the slums. Gary seeks the assistance of Dutch's sister, Marcia Adams, to rally the slum residents to petition for public funds to establish recreational facilities for the children living in poverty. The Governor allocates initial funding for the creation of PAL (the Police Athletic League), and the project progresses smoothly until "Stubby" Adams disrupts a fundraiser for PAL by robbing the box office, jeopardizing the entire initiative. Beyond the uplifting narrative, the film is essentially a Columbia Pictures take on the Dead End Kids, with the tough-minded Darro stepping into Leo Gorcey's role and Hally Chester filling in as his comedic foil, reminiscent of Huntz Hall.
