The Flame and the Arrow (1950) is set in the 12th century in Lombardy, where the region is oppressed by the tyrannical German overlord, Count Ulrich 'The Hawk'. However, in the mountains, a group of rebels continues to fight against his rule. Five years prior to the events of the film, Ulrich abducted the wife of a young archer named Dardo. Dardo, who has become more cynical than bitter, initially has little interest in joining the rebellion. However, his perspective changes dramatically when his son is also taken from him. The narrative then unfolds with thrilling adventures, lighthearted swashbuckling, and romantic moments, including a captivating relationship with a beautiful hostage named Anne.
