Défense d'aimer (1942) centers around Monsieur Gavard, a stern and controlling hotel magnate who insists that his son, Maxime, marry a wealthy South American heiress. However, Maxime is already involved with a mistress who refuses to step aside. To deceive his father, they decide to enter into a marriage in name only. The plan seems foolproof until the wealthy groom finds himself genuinely falling for his new "wife," a manicurist employed at one of his father's hotels in San Marino. This unexpected turn of events leads Maxime to reevaluate his priorities and feelings.
