I Married an Angel (1942) follows the story of Anna Zador, a dedicated secretary who has spent six years at Count Willie Palaffi's bank. Daily, she commutes to work on her bicycle and leaves flowers on Willie's desk, but the Budapest socialite remains oblivious to her existence. "Whiskers," recognizing Anna's kindness and beauty, believes she would be an ideal match for Willie. He persuades Marika, Willie's personal secretary, to invite Anna to Willie's lavish costume birthday party, despite Marika's own romantic aspirations for Willie. Marika, aware of Anna's financial constraints, offers to assist her with a costume. At the party, Anna arrives in a simple angel costume, contrasting with the opulent attire of the other guests. Willie, moved by her plight, invites her to dance, but embarrassed by the guests' laughter, he excuses himself and retires upstairs. There, Willie drifts off to sleep and dreams of an angel named Brigitta descending to earth to marry him.
