His literary pursuits and sexual orientation lead to significant challenges, including a two-year prison sentence where he writes letters for fellow inmates and covertly smuggles out a novel. Post-release, he forms a bond with Lázaro Gomes Garriles, and together they navigate life as stateless individuals in impoverished conditions in Manhattan following their departure from Cuba via the Mariel boat-lift.
