Darkman (1990) follows the story of Peyton Westlake, a dedicated scientist who has been tirelessly working on a groundbreaking project to develop synthetic skin. Unfortunately, his creation has a significant flaw: it only remains stable for 99 minutes. Peyton's girlfriend, Julie, a lawyer, is involved in investigating a corrupt developer and leaves some crucial documents at Peyton's lab. One fateful night, while Peyton is working, the lights go out, and he discovers that his synthetic skin has remained stable beyond the 99-minute mark due to the absence of light. Just as he makes this discovery, a deranged criminal, Robert Durant, bursts in, demanding the documents Julie left behind. Durant and his henchmen brutally assault Peyton, destroy his lab, and leave him for dead. Peyton survives but is severely burned and undergoes a radical procedure that renders him unable to feel pain, grants him immense strength, and makes him prone to violent outbursts. Now, Peyton uses his newfound abilities and his synthetic skin technology to create masks of the men who attacked him, seeking vengeance and justice.
