Ben-Hur (1959) unfolds in the seventh year of Augustus Caesar's rule, in the Roman province of Judea, where Jews are returning to their birth city for the census. A radiant star illuminates the night sky over Bethlehem, signaling the birth of Jesus Christ. Decades later, Roman commander Messala (Stephen Boyd), who was raised in Judea, assumes control of the Roman garrison in Jerusalem. His childhood Jewish friend, Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston), welcomes him warmly. Messala is overjoyed. However, when Judah declines to reveal the identities of Jewish patriots, Messala condemns him to the slave galleys and imprisons his mother, Miriam (Martha Scott), and sister, Tirzah (Cathy O'Donnell). Judah swears vengeance.
