Barbary Pirate (1949) follows the journey of Major Thomas Blake, dispatched by the U.S. government to address the demands of the Bey of Tripoli for tribute from American merchant vessels in the Mediterranean during the early 19th century. Blake's covert mission leads him to disguise himself as a Tory aboard a ship, which initially strains his relationships with fellow passengers Anne Ridgeway and her brother Sam. The ship is subsequently seized by the Bey's pirates near Tripoli, but Blake's quick thinking and bravery earn him the Bey's favor after saving his life. Blake uncovers a plot involving a servant girl, Zoltah, and her allies aiming to assassinate the Bey. Additionally, he discovers that Tobias Sharpe, a spy within the State Department, has been leaking information about American ship movements to the Bey.
