The Shop around the Corner (1940) follows the story of Alfred Kralik, a reserved and gentle headclerk at a Budapest retail store, Matuschek and Company. Daily, the staff eagerly awaits the arrival of their employer, Hugo Matuschek. After responding to a personal ad, Alfred begins a pen pal relationship with an unknown woman. Despite Alfred's reservations, Matuschek hires Klara Novak, a new employee who frequently clashes with Alfred. Unbeknownst to them, Klara is the very same woman with whom Alfred has been exchanging heartfelt letters.
