The Secret Garden (1949) begins with the orphaned Mary Lennox, sent from her home in India to Yorkshire, England, following a cholera outbreak that claims her parents' lives. She is taken in by her reclusive Uncle Archibald Craven, who resides in a sprawling, gloomy mansion on the moors. Mary, initially rude and unlikable, discovers that her uncle wishes to avoid her. While exploring the vast gardens, she stumbles upon a hidden, walled-off area with no apparent entrance. A local boy, Dickon, who is the brother of one of the house maids, reveals the existence of a secret garden behind the wall. With the help of a raven that uncovers a hidden key, Mary and Dickon gain access to the neglected garden. Inside the mansion, Mary learns about her uncle's son, Colin, who is confined to his room due to a mysterious illness and is as spoiled as Mary. The trio then collaborates to transform the secret garden into a thriving sanctuary.
