Special Education (1977) chronicles the journey of Pera 'Trta', a charming young petty thief from a small town near Belgrade. After his mother, who was involved in soliciting, is sent to a mental institution, Pera is placed under the care of social services and sent to a youth correction home. In this new environment, he encounters a diverse group of initially hostile but vibrant individuals. Pera forms a strong bond with Ljupce, a handsome but antisocial boy who has been traumatized by witnessing his mother's murder and refuses to speak. Pera takes on the role of Ljupce's interpreter and spokesperson, especially with girls. Both boys are under the watchful eye of Zarko, a team leader at the institution known for his unconventional methods and caring nature, despite his own personal struggles.
