Set at the fictional Hillman College in the South, the series initially centered on the college experiences of Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet), a sophomore and one of the four daughters from "The Cosby Show." Denise's struggles to adapt to life away from her family's affluent background and her relationships with her roommates were the primary focus of each episode. One of her roommates, Jaleesa Vinson (Dawnn Lewis), saw Denise as somewhat of a spoiled snob. Another roommate, Maggie Lauten (Marisa Tomei), was one of the few white students on the predominantly black campus, making Hillman a truly "different world" for her. Additional recurring characters were introduced during the first season, including Whitley Gilbert (Jasmine Guy), a wealthy Southern belle; Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison), a charismatic New Yorker; Ron Johnson (Darryl Bell), Dwayne's scheming friend; and Warren Oates (Sinbad), the dorm director and gym teacher. Lisa Bonet and her character, Denise, left the show after the first season due to her real-life pregnancy.
