Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982) follows the story of Admiral Kirk, now an instructor at Starfleet Academy, and Captain Spock, who serves as a cadet training officer and commands the U.S.S. Enterprise. Simultaneously, scientists on Space Station Regula I are working on the Project Genesis experiment, with the U.S.S. Reliant assigned to support this project. During a survey of a barren planet in the Ceti Alpha system, Commander Chekov and Captain Clark Terrell make a startling discovery: cargo containers containing survivors from the Eugenics Wars of the 1990s, led by Khan Noonian Singh. Khan reveals that Ceti Alpha VI's explosion altered the orbit of the fifth planet, creating a habitable environment. Khan seizes control of the Reliant and steals the Genesis Device. Admiral Kirk, leading the Enterprise on a training exercise, faces a surprise assault from Khan, who seeks vengeance for his exile. Tragically, Captain Spock sacrifices himself to save the Enterprise from a Genesis torpedo, and his remains are launched into space in a converted torpedo tube.
