King of the Turf (1939) follows the story of Mason, a former racehorse owner who turned to alcohol after the tragic death of one of his jockeys. His life takes a turn when he encounters Goldie, a young runaway with a passion for horses. Goldie, unaware of Mason's past, offers to help him after learning his true identity. Together, they purchase a horse for just two dollars and begin competing in races. Goldie quickly becomes a sensation, but his mother, who reads about his success, tracks him down. To everyone's surprise, she reveals that Goldie is Mason's son. Despite this revelation, Goldie is required to return to school, and they agree to keep their newfound relationship a secret. Desperate to keep Goldie by his side, Mason resorts to fixing the next race, hoping to convince Goldie to intentionally lose.
