A Very Long Engagement (2004) follows the harrowing tale of five soldiers during World War I who, driven by desperation, inflict self-injuries to escape the brutal frontlines at the Somme. A military tribunal sentences them to a grim fate: abandonment in the perilous no-man's land, where they are expected to perish in the crossfire. Chaos ensues, and their presumed deaths are reported. However, one soldier's fiancée, a young woman who has been unable to walk since the age of three, receives cryptic clues suggesting her beloved might have survived. Compelled by hope and determination, she embarks on a grueling, protracted, and often exasperating journey to uncover the truth about her fiancé's fate.
