Dead Ringers (1988) follows the tale of Elliot and Beverly Mantle (both portrayed by Jeremy Irons), a pair of identical twins who are renowned gynecologists. Elliot, the more assertive and self-assured of the two, engages in romantic relationships with women who visit the Mantle Clinic. Once he grows weary of them, these women are then introduced to the more reserved and passive Beverly, who remains unaware of the switch. The dynamic between the twins is disrupted when Beverly develops feelings for the troubled actress Claire Niveau (Geneviève Bujold). Claire's rejection of Beverly leads him into a spiral of clinical depression, prescription drug abuse, and delusions involving "mutant women" with unusual genitalia. The twins' interdependent relationship ultimately results in Elliot's own decline, as Beverly's mental breakdown takes a toll on him.
