Echo in the Mountains (1959) follows a secluded community of Heike descendants residing on a mountain, who have been living in isolation for generations. Rumors circulate about their practice of kidnapping young women from nearby villages for human sacrifices, but their true intention is to introduce new wives to diversify their limited gene pool. Their most recent captive, the stunning Oshina, is revealed to be the daughter of a noble family seeking refuge. Her father was slain by a powerful and malevolent lord who attempted to seize their family's prized possession, a shamisen named Yamabiko. The Heike prince, Kogenta, becomes instantly smitten with Oshina and resolves to marry her and seek vengeance for her father's death.
