Mourning Becomes Electra (1947) is a cinematic adaptation of Eugene O'Neill's modern retelling of the Oresteia. Set in post-American Civil War New England, the story revolves around Ezra Mannon, a weary soldier returning to his discontented wife, Christine, and his devoted daughter, Lavinia. Lavinia's former suitor, Adam Brant, has become Christine's secret lover, and together they conspire to eliminate Ezra through poisoning. Following Ezra's demise, Lavinia enlists her brother Orin's help to expose the lovers' crime. However, Orin's descent into madness and his subsequent suicide note threaten to disrupt Lavinia's newfound romance with Peter Niles.
