The Shop on Main Street (1965) follows the story of Tono Briko, a lazy carpenter living in Czechoslovakia during World War II. The Nazis are seizing Jewish-owned businesses, and Tono sees an opportunity to please his family by taking over a dilapidated button shop run by an elderly, hard-of-hearing Jewish woman. Initially, Tono expects financial gain, but he soon realizes the shop won't be profitable. The shopkeeper, oblivious to the war and her impending danger, is unaware of the situation. Her Jewish friends, aware of the impending threat, offer to pay Tono to stay and assist her, hoping to protect her from being sent to a concentration camp. This film won the 1965 Oscar for Best Foreign Film.
