Mohabbatein (2000) unfolds in a setting where public displays of affection are strictly prohibited in India. Narayan, the stern principal of a prestigious college, upholds these traditions rigidly. He is aware of the romantic entanglements among his students: Vicky's love for Ishika, another student's unrequited feelings for Sanjana, and Karan's forbidden love for a married woman, Kiran. Despite attempts to sway him, Narayan remains unmoved. The arrival of a new music teacher, Raj, complicates matters further. Raj's presence ignites a spark of rebellion among the students, encouraging them to pursue their romantic desires. This defiance infuriates Narayan, especially when he discovers that Raj is the man who once loved his daughter, leading to her tragic suicide. The narrative builds towards a climax where the fate of the six young lovers hangs in the balance, raising the question of whether Narayan's inflexibility will lead to another heartbreaking tragedy.
