Five Cartridges (1960) is set against the backdrop of the Spanish Civil War in 1936. A group of five brigadiers is tasked with remaining in the Spanish Sierras to hold off the advancing fascist forces while the rest of their unit retreats. Their mission is to meet with a radio operator, but upon reaching the designated meeting point, they find no one there. During their search for the missing operator, Kommissar Wittig is fatally shot. Before his demise, he entrusts a crucial message to the remaining men, instructing them to deliver it across enemy lines. The message is divided into five parts, each concealed within a cartridge. The remaining brigadiers embark on a perilous journey through the mountainous terrain, constantly threatened by enemy fire and the harsh conditions of dehydration.
