The Affairs of Martha (1942) revolves around the scandalous rumors circulating in the affluent community of Rocky Point, where whispers suggest that a domestic servant is penning a tell-all book about the elite residents. Mrs. Sophia Sommerfield is confident that neither of her maids, Martha Lindstrom or Mrs. McKessic, could be the author. However, unbeknownst to Sophia, her son Jeff is secretly married to Martha and is currently seeking a divorce to pursue another relationship. When the book is published, Sophia is relieved to discover that Martha's revelations do not expose Sophia's guilty pleasure of reading "true-confession" magazines or reveal that her young daughter, Mirand, writes her club reports for Sophia. Other secrets are also kept under wraps.
