To Mathieu (2000) follows the story of Matthieu and Eric, two brothers employed at the same factory as their father in Normandy. After their father is fired for smoking on the job, Matthieu becomes outraged and attempts to secure his reinstatement, but his efforts are futile. Eric, newly married and expecting a child, is hesitant to cause any disruption. Similarly, Matthieu's coworkers are unwilling to get involved. Tragedy ensues when Matthieu's father is fatally injured in a car accident. Believing his father was driven to suicide, Matthieu vows to exact revenge. His plan involves enticing his boss's wife, Claire, into an affair to humiliate his boss. Matthieu finds Claire surprisingly easy to seduce, but the situation takes an unexpected turn as Matthieu and Claire develop genuine feelings for each other.
