Jane's Declaration of Independence (S) (1915) follows the story of Jane Howe Proctor, a young woman deeply in love with Lieutenant Richard Benton. Her father, Alexander Proctor, a successful businessman, disapproves of their union. Jane, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, is driven by a strong sense of patriotism, much like her father, who envisions a different future for her. The Proctor family has a rich history tied to significant events of the American Revolution, while Richard Benton, a man of integrity and intelligence, comes from humble Midwestern roots. The narrative begins with Richard seeking Mr. Proctor's blessing for their marriage, which is denied. Richard is then deployed to the Presidio in San Francisco. When he receives orders for a potential transfer to the Philippines, he urgently requests Jane's hand in marriage. Despite her father's continued opposition, Jane decides to take matters into her own hands. She writes a letter to Richard, declaring her independence and setting a date for their wedding. Complications arise when her nephew, unaware of the letter's contents, sends a playful note to Richard instead. Meanwhile, Mr. Proctor, discovering Jane's letter, decides to follow her to San Francisco. There, he attempts to persuade Richard to resign from the army by offering him a business partnership. However, Richard, supported by Jane, remains steadfast in his military commitment. Ultimately, Mr. Proctor relents and participates in their military wedding.
