In Country (1989) follows the journey of Samantha Hughes, a young woman from Kentucky who was born after her father's untimely death in the Vietnam War. Raised by her uncle Emmett, a fellow Vietnam veteran, Samantha becomes deeply curious about her father's experiences and the impact of the war on her family. Emmett and his friends—Tom, Earl, and Pete—all grapple with their own war-related traumas, making it difficult for Samantha to get the answers she seeks. Determined to uncover the truth, Samantha organizes a dance to honor the town's veterans, hoping it will prompt conversations about the war. However, the event turns chaotic when Pete and Earl fight, Emmett vanishes, and Tom's attempt to comfort Samantha ends in disappointment. Through reading her father's diary, Samantha gains a deeper understanding of his life and the sacrifices he made. This revelation, combined with a visit to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, helps both Samantha and Emmett find a measure of closure and healing.
