The Ideal Landscape (1981) is set in post-World War II Estonia, where Mait Kukemeri, a dedicated member of the Young Communist League, is sent to the Metsa collective farm via a mobile cinema truck. Tasked with overseeing the spring sowing, Kukemeri is instructed to mobilize everyone to the fields, regardless of the challenging conditions. Harald Tuvikene, the farm's leader, resists these orders, preferring to rely on his rural experience rather than the central authority's directives. Kukemeri finds himself at a crossroads, torn between adhering to the party's directives and doing what he believes is right. He begins to immerse himself in the local community and forms a bond with Liina, a local pioneer activist. As the villagers refuse to sow until the conditions are favorable, Kukemeri becomes entangled in a web of deceptions to his superiors. However, the Communist Party's pervasive surveillance makes it impossible to keep secrets for long.
