In the Valley of Elah (2007) follows the journey of Hank Deerfield (Tommy Lee Jones), a retired military police officer, and his wife Joan (Susan Sarandon) as they desperately seek their son Mike, a soldier who vanished after returning from Iraq. Mike, who had just returned from his tour of duty, is reported as absent without leave (AWOL) after disappearing during his first weekend back home. Hank, with his extensive military background, and Joan are devastated by the news and embark on a mission to find their missing son. Their search leads them to Emily Sanders (Charlize Theron), a tenacious New Mexico police detective who is initially hesitant to assist but eventually joins forces with Hank. As they delve deeper into the case, it becomes apparent that Mike's disappearance is not a simple missing person case but something far more sinister. The investigation uncovers a web of deceit and corruption within the military, forcing Hank to confront his deeply held beliefs and the harsh realities of war. The film explores themes of family, loyalty, and the consequences of war, culminating in a gripping and emotional narrative.
