Out 1 (1971) follows Lili (Michele Moretti), a participant in an avant-garde ensemble preparing a groundbreaking adaptation of Aeschylus's 'Seven Against Thebes'. Concurrently, Thomas (Michel Lonsdale) leads a state-supported group rehearsing 'Prometheus Unbound', another play by the same ancient Greek dramatist. The narrative weaves through the lives of various characters, including Sarah (Bernadette Lafont), a writer and Thomas's longstanding friend; Colin (Jean-Pierre Léaud), a deaf street performer; Frederique (Juliet Berto), a charismatic con artist; and a bohemian shop owner known for her frequent name changes (Bulle Ogier), among others, as they intersect with these two artistic endeavors.
