A Chinese Ghost Story (1987) follows the journey of Ning Tsai-Shen, a modest tax collector who ventures into a remote village to perform his duties. Finding no hospitality, he seeks refuge in the eerie Lan Ro temple for the night. Inside, he encounters Yen Che-Hsia, a Taoist swordsman who advises him to avoid trouble, and the enchanting Nieh Hsiao-Tsing, with whom he develops deep feelings. However, Hsiao-Tsing is a ghost, eternally bound by a grotesque tree spirit that ensnares its victims with an extraordinarily long tongue, draining their life force, or 'yang element'.
