The Princess Bride (1987) begins with a wise old grandfather sharing a whimsical fairy tale with his sickly grandson. The story unfolds in the imaginary land of Florin, where a humble farmhand, Westley (Cary Elwes), departs to seek his fortune, leaving his beloved Buttercup (Robin Wright Penn) behind. Tragically, Westley's ship is attacked by pirates, and Buttercup mourns his loss for years. She eventually consents to marry the scheming Prince Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon), knowing her heart will never be his. The prince, however, has a sinister plot: he plans to use Buttercup's supposed murder to ignite a war that will bolster his control. Fortunately, Buttercup is saved by an enigmatic pirate who is later revealed to be Westley in disguise. Their joyous reunion is short-lived as they encounter various challenges before they can achieve their happily ever after.
