Standard Operating Procedure (2008)

Standard Operating Procedure (2008) delves into the profound impact of a set of photographs that shook the world in 2004. These images, captured at the Abu Ghraib prison in Baghdad, depicted Iraqi prisoners enduring humiliation and torture at the hands of American soldiers. The documentary, directed by Errol Morris, seeks to unravel the complexities surrounding these notorious photographs. Morris investigates the context in which these images were taken, questioning whether they reveal systematic torture or the actions of a few deviant individuals. Through extensive interviews with both the soldiers who took the photographs and those who appear in them, Morris aims to understand the motivations and thoughts behind these actions. The film explores the broader implications of these events on American society, highlighting the loss of innocence and moral integrity that affected the nation as a whole. Standard Operating Procedure (2008) was the first documentary to compete at the Berlin Film Festival, where it received the Gran Jury Prize.
