Postcard (2010) unfolds towards the conclusion of a war, where a group of 100 middle-aged soldiers are dispatched to the frontline based on a lottery system orchestrated by their commanding officer. On the fateful night of the draw, a soldier, anticipating his demise, entrusts Keita Matsuyama with a postcard from his wife. The message reads, "It is the festival today, but the air feels empty without your presence." The soldier's final wish is for Keita to inform his wife that he had read the postcard. As the war concludes, only six out of the 100 soldiers return home. Keita, however, finds no one waiting for him. His wife has left with his father, assuming Keita would not survive. Tomoko, the author of the postcard, was persuaded to remarry her husband's younger brother, who was also killed in the war. Her father-in-law passed away from shock, and her mother-in-law took her own life, leaving Tomoko isolated in a destitute farmhouse. It is during this dire situation that Keita visits Tomoko with the postcard, revealing the harsh realities she now faces.
