Black Robe (1991) follows the journey of a French Jesuit missionary, Father Laforgue, who ventures into the breathtaking and unforgiving Canadian wilderness during the 17th century. His mission is to convert the native Huron and Algonquin tribes, whom he perceives as "savage and godless." The natives, however, possess their own rich spiritual traditions that starkly contrast with Christianity. They view the intrusive "Black Robe" with deep suspicion, resentment, and hostility. When Father Laforgue enlists a reluctant group of Algonquin to guide him on a perilous 1,500-mile journey along the vast and winding St. Lawrence River, a series of catastrophic events unfold. These events not only challenge Father Laforgue's deeply ingrained beliefs but also irrevocably alter the course of history for the native tribes' way of life.
