Ball of Fire (1941) follows a group of eight dedicated scholars in their ninth year of a 12-year endeavor to compile an encyclopedia. Among them is the youngest member, Bertram Potts, an expert in language and grammar. When Potts realizes his section on slang is obsolete, he embarks on a mission to update his research. Meanwhile, nightclub entertainer Sugarpuss O'Shea, engaged to notorious gangster Joe Lilac, finds herself in a tight spot when the police start closing in. Seeking refuge, she crosses paths with Potts, who is captivated by her extensive knowledge of slang and invites her to stay at the professors' residence to further his research. Sugarpuss, seeing an opportunity, uses this as a cover to hide from Lilac. She quickly charms the elderly professors, teaching them the Conga Line and even receives a marriage proposal from Potts. However, Lilac's reappearance complicates Sugarpuss's plans, as he has different intentions for her.
