Some Like It Hot (1939) follows the story of Nicky Nelson, a charismatic sideshow barker who operates a wax-and-alive attraction on Atlantic City's bustling boardwalk. Despite the lively tunes of his friend, struggling musician Gene Krupa, the low-budget acts like "The Living Corpse" fail to captivate the jaded boardwalk crowd. The landlord, fed up with the unpaid rent, shuts down the show. Undeterred, Nicky, ever the promoter, approaches Stephen Hanratty, the head of the pier's Dance Pavilion, to pitch Krupa's band as a new attraction. However, Hanratty dismisses the idea outright. During his visit, Nicky encounters singer Lily Racquel, who sees through his facade but believes he might have the persuasive skills to secure her a radio audition. She loans him a ring to help fund the venture, but Nicky quickly loses it in a high-stakes crap game.
