Milky Way (2000) unfolds in the aftermath of war in Sarajevo, centering around two distinct families united by a common aspiration: emigration. Mujo Hrle, once a biology professor, now earns his living by wearing a fez and driving a horse-drawn carriage through Sarajevo's streets. Despite enduring the war in Sarajevo, Mujo and his wife, Sena, envision no future in their homeland and aspire to relocate to New Zealand. However, their plans are thwarted when they fail the "resettlement test" due to their Muslim faith, as priority is given to mixed marriages. Meanwhile, Anna, who shares a similar disillusionment with life in Sarajevo, coincidentally chooses the same distant land to secure a better future for herself and her husband, Josip. They, too, are both Croats and face the same obstacles as the Hrles. Enter Ale, a self-made businessman with a controversial past, who offers a solution. In exchange for saving his life from an assassination attempt, Ale introduces the couples and proposes they divorce their current spouses and switch partners to meet the resettlement test requirements.
