The Quare Fellow (1962) follows the journey of Thomas Crimmins, a fresh-faced and idealistic new guard in an Irish penitentiary. Eager to contribute to his nation by enforcing justice, Crimmins' perspective begins to shift under the influence of his seasoned superior, Regan. Regan, weary of the harsh, retaliatory mindset that leads to the execution of condemned criminals, often referred to as "quare fellows," helps Crimmins see the humanity in the prisoners. Crimmins' worldview is further challenged when he forms a connection with Kathleen, the spouse of one of the condemned men. As new information surfaces that could exonerate Kathleen's husband, Crimmins grapples with his sense of duty and his growing empathy.
