Riders in the Sky (1968) opens with a somber scene at the military cemetery in English Brookwood, where numerous white gravestones bear Czech names. These markers honor Czechoslovak soldiers who served in the British army during World War II and made the ultimate sacrifice for their homeland. The haunting cries of the wounded and dying transport the narrative back by a quarter of a century. The story revolves around the crew of a bomber, which includes a Slovak captain, an English co-pilot and navigator, a Canadian radioman, and two Czech gunners.
