The Fire Within (1963) follows the story of Alain Leroy, a writer in his mid-thirties who is undergoing treatment for alcoholism at a private nursing home near Paris. Although he has nearly overcome his addiction, Alain struggles with persistent bouts of depression and has decided to end his life in a few days. On a final outing to Paris, he reconnects with old acquaintances and former lovers, but these encounters feel increasingly hollow and devoid of genuine connection.
